It’s a great time to be a Space Quest fan

It’s not all holiday snark from me. Yes, yesterday’s post was borne out of an alcoholic rage, but at this point you should know better what to expect from me. So here’s some real holiday cheer for you:

One of the perks of being the jerk who wrote the Space Quest FAQ is that you get to butt in on a lot of cool stuff. In this case, I had the very good fortune to play a beta of a new Space Quest fan-game, Vohaul Strikes Back, which is now out and about. (Go download it. It’s free!)

The cool guy who did the cool character animation for that game, Chris Ushko, is also working on his own Space Quest fan game, Incinerations. Again, because I’m a jerk, I get to play this before you do. But I’m doing so because I love you, so don’t fret. Also, Chris is an awesome guy, who basically ended up co-writing the design for my own game, A Life Worth Losing 2, even though I only asked him for comments and helpful suggestions.

And lastly, even though I don’t actually have an in with them, I’ve been hungrily eyeing the Space Quest II re-make by Infamous Adventure. These are the same jerks— sorry, bad habit. These are the same guys who did the brilliant King’s Quest II remake that pretty much took the original, tossed out all the bits that didn’t make sense (e.g. Roberta Williams’ original script), and put something together that did.

I don’t know if my old pal Daniel Stacey is involved in the SQ2 remake, but he did the KQ2 script for Infamous, and if he’s in any way involved, my heart races doubly for this game. It’s been several years of frustratingly hitting F5 on the Infamous website, hoping in vain that they’d get around to pulling their thumbs out their asses and release the thing already, and now the announcement has finally come: On December 30th, there shall be Wilco.

All in all, it’s a great time ot be a Space Quest fan. Check out Roger Wilco’s profile on Google+. I swear, I have nothing to do with it. Except that I’m writing it.
